Knob and Tube is an old two wire system where lights, plugs and receptacles are not grounded.

From 1880’s it was widely used through the 1930’s. In some locations installed into the late 1950’s.

Years ago there were few electrical appliances, electricity usage and loads were limited. K&T was the best and only option.

The wires were spliced and soldered together inside walls, without junction boxes and then wrapped with electrical tape. Wiring was rubber and cloth covered #14 copper conductor mounted on porcelain Knobs nailed to the wood studs and joists. When required to pass through these members porcelain Tubes were inserted in holes with the conductors inside. Where wires entered a junction, plug, or switch box, they were protected by insulating sleeving made of the asphalt-saturated cloth.

Knob and Tube wiring therefore never touched the wood structure or plaster. Heat from load or overload dissipated in the air space between rafters and partitions.

These circuits originally could be protected by 20 Amp plug fuses. Do not use fuse or breaker over 15 Amp today.

Visual inspection of conductors and splices can determine the state of Knob and Tube integrity nowadays. Conductors with bare or dry, crumbling or stiff insulation should be replaced. These conditions resulted from over-current, shorts, improper fusing, or high temperatures. Problems are usually found in switch, plug, and junction boxes, in attics, furnace or boiler rooms and especially above the lights.

Homeowners often add thermal insulation to their attics and walls. Knob and tube wiring buried in thermal insulation causes overheating and is a major fire hazard. Renovators should avoid placing insulation directly over or around the wires. If found, buried K&T should be freed of thermal insulation.

Knob and Tube circuit extensions and additional loads should be avoided. Splicing new wires and Knob and Tube is not advisable. Over-fusing these lines with 20 Amp is dangerous, 30 Amp fuse would almost certainly cause a fire.

When installed correctly Knob and Tube wiring suspended in the air could carry higher current without overheating. It's a single K&T advantage over the modern wiring. Knob and tube wiring on its own is not inherently a problem. Wiring that has deteriorated or been abused is.

A broken fluorescent bulb releases elemental mercury or products that contain mercury into the air. Inhaled mercury vapor is a concern especially in warm and non-ventilated areas.

The mercury vapor and contaminated dust from a broken fluorescent bulb eventually settles onto land and gets washed into the water. Microbes transform mercury into a more volatile methylmercury. This highly toxic mercury containing chemical builds up in fish, shellfish and fish eating animals. Certain types of commercially-caught fish and shellfish accumulate very high concentration of mercury.

Outbreaks of methylmercury poisoning showed that pregnant women and especially unborn children are at risk due to methylmercury contaminated food consumption. Some healthy mothers gave birth to infants with severe disabilities. Developing nervous system of the fetus is more vulnerable to methylmercury than is the adult nervous system. Breast-feeding may also expose infant children to mercury through the milk.

When do you need the job done? Within days, weeks?
Is there a ceiling light installed or an existing ceiling junction box in each room?

Is free daytime parking available without difficulty and without time limit at your place or within 20 meters?
How many pot lights in how many rooms do you need? (pls give the list of rooms and number of potlights per room)

If the building is 15 yr old or more, what does the wall/ceiling plaster consist of: one layer of drywall, two or more layers of drywall?

It's impossible to install pot lights into the concrete ceiling
It's only possible to run an exposed wire on the concrete wall
It's impossible to run a wire inside the concrete wall if there is no drywall
It's impossible to install a recessed switch box or receptacle into a concrete wall
It's impossible to install a recessed switch or receptacle if the depth of drywall + studs is not deep enough

Please make sure that ceiling is a hollow drop ceiling
And the distance from the drop ceiling up to a concrete structure above is more than 7"

1) Turn off the electrical power at the FUSE BOX or BREAKER BOX! This step is crucial for your safety. To make sure you do it right, first turn off all the circuit breakers one by one. 2) You have to hook the ground (green or naked wire) from the light fixture to the ceiling junction box's ground wire or to the box's grounding screw. Then connect black to black and white to white using marrettes or approved wire nuts of the appropriate size

3) What if your ceiling box has multiple wires in it? First connect the ground and white wires as described above. Then use the trial and error method. Connect the black wire from the light fixture to one colored wire (or to two or more spliced together colored wires). Go to the FUSE BOX or BREAKER PANEL, turn the main fuse or breaker ON first, and then turn on circuit breakers one by one. Following this order is imperative. Then go back to you light and try the switch. If the switch does not turn the light on and off you have to connect the black wire from the light fixture to another colored wire (or to two or more spliced together colored wires) inside the ceiling light outlet box. Go to the step 1). And repeat the procedure until you find the right combination and the switch controls your new light

You can figure out the right colored wire faster and easier with the help of a non-contact voltage detector. But it costs $40

Do not install a light if there is NO box above. It's against the code and dangerous. The presence of a metal or plastic ceiling junction box is mandatory

And NEVER, EVER, EVER install lights yourself in a condo or apartment building, office, or another commercial facility. It is illegal, it threatens not only your family but the lives of all inhabitants in the building. If caught, you would be fined, brought to court, you would forfeit your insurance and face other terrible consequences for just installing a singel light!

Mandatory and formal requirement in Ontario is: to call the Electrical Safety Authority at (1-877-esa-safe) to arrange for an inspection of any electrical work you are doing. Light installation in Toronto and in Ontario is the electrical work by definition
